Women's Tennis Falls to Ferris State in a Friday Morning Home Match

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs by a final score of 5-2 on Friday, April 16 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match in the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste Marie, Mich. Through the first eight matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 2-6 overall record and a 1-5 record in conference play.

The Lakers dropped the doubles point after a tight battle in the three matches. The team's top pair of Nadege Koua and Milena Baigorria won their match 6-4. Ferris State won the second doubles match by a score of 6-1. In the final doubles match, the No. 3 duo of Julia Fraile Raton and Muskaan Ranjan fell in the tiebreaker of their match. 

In singles play, the Lakers won two of the six matches. Baigorria, the Lakers No. 2 singles player, won her match in two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Malpass, playing in the No. 5 spot for the Lakers, won in the third set as her opponent retired. Malpass won the second set (7-5) to force the third set. 

Ferris State won the remaining four matches to take the victory. Sole, playing in the fourth singles spot, lost in a close three set match. After dropping the first set, Sole came back to win the second set (6-2). The third set ended in a 7-6 score with Ferris clinching the win in a tiebreaker. Koua, Ranjan and Fraile Raton each fell in two sets to their Bulldog opponents.

Looking Ahead

The Lakers will wrap up their homestand tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. against the Grand Valley State Lakers in the Student Activity Center.
