Huskies pull away for 76-57 win over Cardinals

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team traveled to the Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech in the first of two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests Friday in Houghton, Mich. 

The Huskies opened the game on a 13-2 run, but SVSU closed the gap throughout the first half, taking a one-point lead on a Darnell Hoskins Jr. 3-pointer with two minutes remaining in the opening frame. 

Michigan Tech scored the final six points heading into halftime and led the rest of the way in a 76-57 win over the Cardinals. The loss drops SVSU to 2-8 overall and 2-8 in the GLIAC.

Hoskins Jr. led the Cardinals with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Myles Belyeu added 14 points, while Delano Smith finished with 12.

SVSU shot 21-of-53 from the field, 7-of-16 from deep, and 8-of-15 at the line, finishing with 11 assists, eight steals, and 12 turnovers. 

The Huskies (7-3, 5-3 GLIAC) were led by a game-high 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting from Eric Carl. 

The two teams close the weekend series at 2 pm Saturday in Houghton, Mich.
