Baseball Blanks Parkside to Open Series

DETROIT -- The Wayne State university baseball team (11-6 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) returned to league play on Friday afternoon at Harwell Field with a 7-0 win over Parkside (0-12 overall, 0-5 GLIAC).  The Warriors used an impressive start from graduate student Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (3-1) and a big fifth-inning to collect their third GLIAC win of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) singled to start the bottom of the second inning to right and reached third base on a fielding error by the right fielder on the same play.  A sacrifice fly from redshirt junior Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) gave WSU a 1-0 lead.  Parkside loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning and a walk issued to junior Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) doubled the home advantage to 2-0.  One batter later, senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) cleared the bases with a three-run double into the left field corner to make it 5-0.

Redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) sent a one-out single to the left side and came around to score on a sac fly by redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Green & Gold added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Foley.

AT THE PLATE
Foley and Finkbeiner both finished with two hits, while redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

ON THE MOUND
McInerney struck out seven scoreless innings to notch his third win of the season and lower his ERA to 0.85.  Redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) worked the final two frames and did not allow a run.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold are scheduled to play two games vs. Parkside beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
