Dragons fail to catch Chargers 80-69

Tiffin University (6-16, 4-13 GLIAC) played close with Hillsdale throughout their rematch at the Gillmor Center, making numerous runs to tighten the score, but could not find a way to take the lead, as Hillsdale hung on to win 80-69.

The Chargers used 58 percent field goal shooting in the opening quarter to jump ahead 20-15, but the Dragons hung tough, erasing a 9 point second quarter deficit to pull to with 1 point with 3:59 to play in the half. They entered halftime trailing just 37-32.

TU was shooting just 35 percent at the half and were struggling to keep up inside, where Hillsdale held a 25-16 rebounding edge and a 26-4 scoring advantage.TU hit 6 treys to keep itself close.

The third quarter also saw HIllsdale push its lead to 9 points on three separate occasions, but the Dragons continued to scrap, cutting the lead to just one shot at 50-47 with 1:48 left in the quarter.

TU's best chance came at 9:05 of the final period, when a 3 pointer by Allie Miller tied the score at 57-57. But the Chargers responded with a 15-6 run that put them up 12 points and effectively ended the game. Hillsdale hit enough free throws down the stretch to keep TU at bay.

Overall TU hit just 37 percent from the floor while Hillsdale never cooled off, finishing with 53 percent. They outrebounded TU 44-34 and outscored them 42-16 in the paint.

Ali Schirmer led TU off the bench with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Bre Nauman had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Sarah Cummings and Allie Miller had 9 points each while Kristen Massey also had 8 points.
