Bulldog Softball Celebrates Senior Day As Weather Impacts League Home Doubleheader

Senior Day Highlights & Interviews

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday (April 30), but weather impacted FSU's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State at the FSU Softball Field.

The visiting Cardinals won the opening game 3-0 before game two was called off heading to the third inning due to rain and wet weather.

Ferris State honored the senior trio of Paige Kortz, Ali Magiera and Abby Mitchelson as part of the twin bill with their parents throwing out celebratory first pitches prior to game one. They were then honored in a special postgame ceremony that was moved indoors after rain stopped the nightcap. Previously, FSU honored its fourth senior in pitcher Kaitlyn Nugent on Friday.

In the opener, the Bulldogs held the Cardinals scoreless for six of the seven innings, but SVSU's three-run second inning was enough to garner the win. Saginaw Valley State pitcher Emily DePew earned the complete game shutout as she held FSU scoreless on six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs' six hits included a pair from right fielder Kylie Winkels, but FSU had no extra-base hits in the outing. The other four hits came from Kortz along with Evelyn Blood, Josie Prince and Abby Mitchell.

For the Bulldogs, freshman Kristina Baar earned the start and gave up three runs on four hits. Junior Kristie Gray pitched two and one-third scoreless innings with three hits allowed while Kaitlyn Orme tossed the final three innings and did not give up a run on one hit. The trio had no walks and no strikeouts combined.

In game two, Saginaw Valley State jumped in front with six runs scored in the first two innings before the contest was stopped moving into the third. The game will not be made up.

Ferris State wraps up the regular-season at home on Sunday (May 1) as FSU is slated to host Wisconsin-Parkside in a rescheduled conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (ET) for game one with game two to follow at approximately 3 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
