Baseball Holds Off Upstart UM-Dearborn

DETROIT -- The 19th-ranked Wayne State University baseball program (15-3 overall) hosted Michigan-Dearborn (7-10-1 overall) on Wednesday afternoon in the first home game of the season inside Harwell Field.  The Warriors topped the Wolverines 13-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UM-Dearborn scored a run on two walks and a passed ball in the top of the first inning.  Wayne State responded with nine runs on five hits and three visitor errors in the bottom of the first inning.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) doubled home the inning's first run before Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) drove in two runs with a double into left center.  Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) and Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) added RBI singles before Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) doubled home another two runs.  A Dearborn fielding error led to the final two runs of the inning.

The Wolverines scored twice in the top of the second inning on a two-run single.  Another two-run single into right center in the top of the third inning trimmed WSU's lead to 9-5.  A solo home run off the bat of Jon Quintal brought UMD within three in the fifth inning.  The momentum stayed in the visiting dugout as a two-run home run from Shaun Hannibal in the top of the sixth inning allowed UM-Dearborn to pull within a run at 9-8.  UMD eventually tied the game at 9-9 on an RBI single by Patrick Downing down the right field line.

Kelly hit his 29th career home run (seven shy of the program record) in the bottom of the sixth inning to give WSU an 11-9 advantage.  The Wolverines did not go away quietly and scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game at 11-11.

DeLanoy sent a solo shot over the wall in right center in the bottom of the eighth inning and an Iacobelli RBI double made it 13-11.  Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Catherdral) came in for the ninth inning and worked around a two-out single to seal the victory.

AT THE PLATE
DeLanoy finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while hitting his first collegiate home run.  Kelly drove in four runs with two hits, while Iacobelli went 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) scored three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Wayne State used eight pitchers.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) started and allowed an unearned run before Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) worked the second inning, giving up two runs.  Max Moon (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) allowed two runs in the third inning before Dustin Renfroe (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice / U of D Jesuit) pitched two innings, allowing three runs.  Matt Krutsch (Essex, Ont.) struck out four batters over an inning and a 1/3, allowing two runs.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) worked a perfect 2/3 of an inning before Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) (1-1) allowed a run in his inning of work.  Schmidt collected his second save of the season by working the ninth inning and retiring three of the four batters he faced.
