Volleyball Wins Sixth Straight

WSU holds off a SVSU comeback to win in five sets.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (19-5 overall, 11-2 GLIAC) secured a home playoff with a four-set win at Saginaw Valley State (15-9 overall, 7-6 GLIAC) on Friday night.  The Warriors were up 2-0 after winning by scores of 25-18 and 25-23.  The Cardinals tied the match at 2-2 with wins of 25-21 and 25-17.  The Green & Gold won a thrilling fifth-set 15-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) gave the visitors a 7-3 lead, which grew to 11-4 after a point by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).  Kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.), Taylor Wagner (St. Joesph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and three service aces from Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) pushed WSU's advantage to 18-7.  SVSU trimmed the deficit to 19-14 but Wayne State regained control to lead 23-14 and would on to win 25-18.

Saginaw Valley State led the second set 6-4 and 12-9.  A kill and an ace from Wagner tied the set at 13-13 but the Cardinals would hold the momentum and led 21-18.  WSU ended the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-23.

SVSU led 10-6 to start the third set.  The Green & Gold were never really able to find their footing and fell 25-21.

Wayne State continued to search for its early-match form but trailed set number four 11-7 and 14-8.  A spike from Wagner brought WSU withing five, 19-14, but the comeback stalled there as the Cards won 25-17.

WSU started the final set leading 5-1 before a block by Wagner made it 8-4.  SVSU stormed back to take a 10-8 lead before leading 12-10.  Kills from Kray and Shell tied the set at 12-12 but Saginaw Valley won the next point.  The Warriors won the next three points, including a match-ending kill by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner led a trio of Warriors with double-digit kills, posting 14.  Kray had 13, while Shell tallied 12 kills.  Duffield dished out 46 assists, while Wagner (24) and Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) (22) both notched 20-dig matches.

ONE BIG THING
In a very tightly contested match, the service line may have been the difference.  The Warriors had seven aces compared to four by the Cardinals.

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
"Great match up in Saginaw tonight!  Their team played great and gave us everything we could handle.  When it came down to it, we played the big point better and had an outstanding performance from Jenna!"
