Ferris State Women's Tennis Takes GVSU To The Wire In Tightly-Contested GLIAC Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad battled unbeaten Grand Valley State to the finish on Wednesday (Oct. 2) night, but the Bulldogs suffered their first setback of the year in a tightly-contested 4-3 decision at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.

The two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rivals battled back and forth before the Lakers eventually garnered the win indoors to move to 3-0 on the year. FSU fell to 2-1 with the loss.

Ferris State took the initial point in the match as the Bulldogs claimed wins at the first and third doubles flights to pick up the doubles point. All three doubles matches were determined by identical 6-2 scores with GVSU claiming the middle spot.

In singles play, the Lakers rallied and captured the top four flights to earn the comeback victory. It included a hard-fought and close three-set decision at the number four flight.

The Bulldogs got singles wins from Morgan Waller at five singles and from Johanna Frye in a three-setter at the sixth flight in the lineup.

"It was an awesome match and I saw so much fight in my players that it made me very proud to be their coach," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Matches like this will help us grow as we move forward."

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 5) as they face Davenport on the road in GLIAC action at 10 a.m. (ET). FSU then visits Purdue Northwest for yet another league encounter at the same time on Sunday (Oct. 6).
