Lakers sink Huskies 6-1

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Neva Manas completed a comeback at No. 4 singles but the Huskies fell 6-1 to Grand Valley State in women's tennis Friday morning at Gates Tennis Center. The Lakers grabbed the team doubles point when Vera Griva and Taylor Barrett downed Ivona Gorgioski and Neva Manas 6-4 at No. 2. Dominika Bobik and Lauren Opalewski found early doubles success with a 7-5 win at No. 1 but Mirna Golac and Marina Fernandez were routed 6-0 at No. 3. The Lakers followed with straight sets victories in singles, with the exception of Manas at No. 4.

Manas battled back after dropping the first set 6-4 to Marily Canellopoulos for a 10-5 super-tiebreak played in lieu of a third set. Ivona Gorgioski was competitive at No. 1 but ultimately succumbed to Vera Griva 6-3, 6-4. Bobik fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Lauren Opalewski lost 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4.

"Today wasn't the best day for us," said head coach Kristin Yep. "We still have alot of things to work on to get better. We had some bright spots but we need to be more consistent as a team."

The Huskies (3-7, 3-3 GLIAC) have played just one match in Houghton this spring. Tech hosts Ferris State at 9 a.m. Saturday, then closes the regular season with Lake Superior State Monday at 9 a.m.
