Volleyball Stumbles at Home vs. Davenport

The Warriors were swept by the Panthers for the second time this season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (10-6, 4-4 GLIAC) were swept by Davenport (13-4, 6-2 GLIAC) on Friday night inside the Matthaei.  The Panthers won by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The visitors started the opening set with a 6-1 lead before WSU trimmed its deficit to one, 10-9, after a kill and an ace by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.).  The Warriors were never able to tie the set and trailed 13-10, 17-14 and 20-17.  DU won six of the final eight points to win 25-20.

Davenport started the second set leading 7-5 and 11-7.  With DU up 16-13, Wayne State won three straight points to tie the set at 16-16.   Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) had a kill and Kendyl Andrews (Flushing, Mich.) provided a service ace.  The Panthers controlled the rest of the set and led 23-19 before winning 25-21.


The Green & Gold won the first five points of the third set. and led 8-3 following an ace from Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower).  Davenport would come back to tie the set at 12-12 and 13-13.  The Panthers would lead to 16-14 before WSU regained the lead, 17-16, after a kill by VanderWal and two DU errors.  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) put the Warriors on top, 20-19, with a kill.  WSU held onto a 22-21 advantage before the visitors took the next two points.  Morrison made it 23-23 with a spike but DU would capture the final two points to complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) finished with a team-high 10 kills, while Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) tallied 27 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) collected 18 digs.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold finish their five-match home stand against Parkside on Saturday.  First serve is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
