Concordia drops home opener to #20 Lakers

Golden Bears fall behind early in double-digit loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. - #20 Grand Valley State scored the first eight goals in the game's opening 10-plus minutes en route to a 17-4 win over Concordia-St. Paul on Friday evening at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

After dropping their home and conference openers, Concordia falls to 3-3 on the season while Grand Valley State improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC play. CSP will host Davenport (Mich.) on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Concordia Dome. Davenport picked up a 20-10 road win at Northern Michigan in each team's GLIAC opener this evening.

The Lakers established the tone for the game off the opening draw, scoring in the first minute before Concordia had possession. GVSU took the game's first four draws, scoring on each before Concordia had possession and didn't allow the Golden Bears to advance to the offensive end until nearly five minutes into play.

It was the first part of an 8-0 run in the first 10-plus minutes of play, although Concordia would get hot late in the second half, scoring three of the next four goals before heading into halftime down seven, 10-3.

Junior Kailey Heinl put Concordia on the scoreboard with her eighth goal just past the midway point of the half on a freshman Mary Keating's sixth assist of the year. Junior Maddie Hentges (11) and sophomore Lex Seifert (4) put in back-to-back goals within a minute and a half of each other late i n the first half.

In the first half, GVSU held an 11-2 edge on the draw although Concordia picked up their game advancing it back to their zone with 8-of-11 clears, forcing 13 first half Laker turnovers and securing nine ground balls.

Although Concordia trimmed the lead to 9-3 late in the half, Grand Valley State would counter with one more 8-0 run from late in the first through most of the second half.

CSP closed out the scoring in the final minute when freshman Hannah Distad drove across the middle, finding sophomore Katie Moynihan for the pass-and-shoot score.

In the final tally, GVSU held a 17-4 edge on the draw leading to a 35-13 shot margin although the teams were with 22 turnovers each with ground balls being close at 19-17 in favor of GVSU.

Concordia was efficient on the clear all night, executing on 14-of-18 while GVSU was similar at 14-of-17.

Hentges added three caused turnovers and a pair of  ground balls to her goal and Heinl also had three ground balls in addition to her team-highs of four shots and three shots on goal. Junior Tia Zachman sparked the defense off the bench with a pair of caused turnovers and ground balls.

In the net, junior Katie Lottsfeldt started and saved seven shots before giving way to sophomore Claire Hagen early in the second half, who made four saves the rest of the way.

Grand Valley State was led by Abbi O'Neal's four goals and Kelley Fitzgerald's five assists while Carly Shisler also had three goals and an assist. Payton Neil picked up the win in goal, saving four shots to her three goals allowed.
