Baseball Routs Southwest Baptist 14-1

The Warriors improve to 10-5 on the season.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (10-5) played the first of three games against Southwest Baptist (5-13) on Thursday night and the Warriors won 14-1 behind a pair of four-run innings.  The contest finished after eight innings due mercy rules.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) walked to begin the game in the top of the first inning and then stole second and third base.  After another walk to Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.), Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) singled home the game's first run.  The Warriors scored three more runs on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), a bases-loaded walk to Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) and a single from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett).

Wayne State stretched its lead to 6-0 as two runs scored on a throwing error by the SBU catcher.  Later in the frame, a double steal, including Foley swiping home gave the Green & Gold a 7-0 advantage.  The Bearcats scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim their deficit to 7-1.  SBU was aided by an error and two base hits in the inning.

The Warriors were quick to respond as Finkbeiner sent a leadoff triple into right field and Tanderys followed with an RBI single.  Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) drove in WSU's ninth run of the night with a sacrifice fly.  Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) made it 10-1 with an RBI infield single.

Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) drove in Jacob Badalamenti (Harrison Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) after he tripled earlier in the eighth inning.  An RBI from Finkbeiner and two more runs on a Tanderys single pushed the Warrior lead to 14-1.

Following the bottom of the eight inning, the game was called due to run rule.

AT THE PLATE
Tanderys powered the WSU offense by going 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored. Finkbeiner finished 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (1-1) allowed one unearned run on four hits and two walks in five innings, while striking out four batters.

Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) was the first out of the bullpen and worked a perfect sixth inning before Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh. Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) struck out three batters in his inning of relief to end the game.

WSU will finish the series and its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader vs. the Bearcats on Saturday.  Game one is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
