Baseball bounces back late for 8-5 victory over Saint Anselm

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Taking on Saint Anselm on Thursday (Mar. 5) in Florida, the Cardinals came back with four runs in the seventh inning to secure an 8-5 win over the Hawks. 

With the victory, Saginaw Valley improves to 7-4 on the young season while the Hawks fall to 4-6 overall. 

Single runs came SVSU's way in the 2nd and 3rd innings, giving the home Cards a 2-0 lead. Brandon Scheurer had an RBI single to score Todd Paperd and Mitch Morley had an RBI groundout to plate Collin Winters

Saint Anselm scored five runs in the top of the 5th inning after using a two-run home run and taking advantage of a few errors. That gave the Hawks a 5-2 lead.

Joshua Riggs responded for SV in the bottom of the 5th, belting a two-run shot of his own to score Morley and trim the team's deficit to one run at 5-4. 

The 7th inning is where the Cards scored four runs, finishing the game's scoring at 8-5 after regaining the lead. Paperd ripped an RBI single, Martin Money added an RBI double and Tucker Roe had a two-RBI single. 

Paperd finished with four hits, two runs and an RBI. Money had a pair of doubles with a run, RBI and walk. Roe had a hit, two RBI and walked three times. Riggs had two hits, two runs and two RBI with his home run. 

John Fantauzzo picked up the win in relief after working 2.1 innings. He didn't allow any runs or hits, walking four and registering four strikeouts. Nolan Hamilton got the save, pitching the final 2.0 innings and striking-out five batters.
