Ferris State Men's Tennis Keeps Record Perfect With Big Home Win Over Grace

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad kept its unblemished mark intact as the Bulldogs registered a 7-0 shutout over Grace on Sunday (Feb. 27) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs earned the doubles point by taking two of the three flights and came back to sweep the six singles position en route to the win.

With the victory, FSU is now 6-0 overall this year.

"It was a great day for our men's team," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "We played a team that grinds and plays deep behind the baseline, which is what we will see a lot of next week in Florida.

"Pulling out a 7-0 victory against a good team playing that style was very satisfying for our guys," he added.

The Bulldogs got doubles wins from the tandem of Mathis Guerre and Jan Koupil at the number one flight along with Josh McDermott and Benjamin Lortie at two doubles by scores of 6-2 and 7-5, respectively.

In singles action, the Bulldogs captured five of the six flights in straight-sets with Lortie notching a hard-fought 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-8 victory at the fourth spot in the lineup. Guerre was victorious at the top flight with Koupil posting a win at two singles and Yannic Alexander Mader earning a triumph at the third position.

The Bulldogs also swept the bottom half of the lineup as Lortie was joined by freshman Alessandro Santangelo and McDermott, who were decisive winners at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.

The victory lifted FSU's home mark this year to a perfect 4-0 in Big Rapids.

Ferris State heads to Florida for its annual spring break trip and is currently slated to play four matches March 8-11 near Orlando. FSU opens competition in the Sunshine State against Dallas Baptist on March 8 at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando.
