A 5-2 Defeat For Women's Tennis Wraps Up Florida Road Trip

The Warriors were attempting to sweep the spring break games.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The No. 7-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (12-2 overall) finished the Florida trip by falling 5-2 to No. 3-ranked Nova Southeastern University (9-1 overall, 2-0 Sunshine State) on Tuesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex at Rolling Hills.

DOUBLES
The Sharks jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, as the third-best team in the nation nabbed two of the three matches in doubles play.

At the No. 1 spot, Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) fell 6-1 to the second-ranked duo in the country of Fatima Bizhukova and Natalie Espinal.

NSU officially claimed the point with their 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, with Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) dropping the decision to Karolina Snita and Julie Razafindranaly.

The Green and Gold pairing of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) pulled off an impressive 7-6 (2) victory in a tiebreaker over their opponents at the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
WSU grabbed a pair of wins in singles action, but it was not enough to overcome Nova Southeastern on the scoreboard.

The Wayne State victors were Szpakowska and Weekes at the No. 5 and No. 6 spot, respectively.  Szpakowska kept her perfect play in singles alive by shutting out her opponent (6-0) in the first set, then winning the second by a 6-4 score.  Weekes also tallied the win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Kashmira Manohar.

Gorgidze lost by matching 6-1 scores at the No. 4 spot, giving NSU a 2-0 edge.

Facing the No.43-ranked singles player in Espinal, Komar lost 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.

The Sharks clinched the win at the No. 3 spot, with Arafat dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to the No. 25-ranked singles player in Snita.

The battle at No. 1 singles was a match-up of two ranked competitors, as Ruyssen entered the match as the No.14-ranked player, with opponent Razafindranaly as the No. 15-ranked player.  Ruyssen picked up a second set win (6-3) to force a deciding third set, but was shut out 6-0 there to lose her first singles match of the spring season.
