Bulldog Softball Drops Pair Of Close Sunday Games At Davenport

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad battled Davenport to the finish, but came up short in a pair of tightly-contested Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchups on Sunday (April 11) at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia.

The Panthers earned a 3-2 win in the opener and topped FSU 6-3 in the nightcap.

In game one, DU's Emma Miller limited the Bulldogs to only two runs on three hits in garnering the victory. Davenport picked up the win on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Ferris State's three hits included a pair of doubles with one coming off the bat of Kaitlyn Orme and the other by Justice Ruggles. Left fielder Abby Mitchell also had a hit for the Bulldogs with an RBI while Ruggles drove in the other run.

In the circle, FSU's Aryn Gallacher tossed six and one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kylie Masko gave up a single hit with a walk in relief.

In game two, the Panthers struck for two runs in the first and added single runs in the third and fourth while building a 4-2 lead. FSU cut the margin back to a single run in the sixth before DU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and held the Bulldogs scoreless in the seventh. Overall, Davenport had 12 hits to three for the Bulldogs.

Outfielder Paige Kortz homered for the Bulldogs and drove in two runs while Ruggles also had an RBI. Both shortstop Kodi Ramirez and second baseman Kacey Bouche posted hits as well for FSU.

For Ferris State, Kristie Gray hurled four innings of action and gave up four runs on seven hits with a walk. Kaitlyn Nugent tossed two innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a strikeout. Davenport's Taylor Simon garnered the win, giving up only three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk in going the distance.

Ferris State continues a busy stretch on Monday (April 12) as the Bulldogs visit Purdue Northwest for a league doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. (ET) for game one with game two slated for 4 p.m. (ET). FSU then returns home to host rival Grand Valley State on Wednesday (April 14) afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m.
