Turnovers and Penalties Lead to 30-27 Setback Against Michigan Tech

Warriors out-gained the Huskies 554-306.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad (0-6 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) suffered a 30-27 loss to visiting Michigan Tech University (3-2 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) at Tom Adams Field Saturday evening in the 84th annual Homecoming contest for WSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

The Warriors drove 71 yards in 14 plays on the game's opening possession culminating in a 32-yard field goal from freshman Griffin Milovanski (Saugatuck, Mich.).  Sophomore Kendall Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) had an 18-yard reception, and sophomore wideout Trevonte Davis (Flint, Mich. / Hamady) had a 20-yard run on a reverse during the drive.

After each team threw an interception on the next drives, the Huskies grabbed a 7-3 advantage on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Will Ark to Darius Willis just past the mid-point of the opening stanza.

MTU drove into the red zone as the first quarter ended, with Drew Wyble connecting on a 26-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter extended the Huskie lead to 10-3.

Second Quarter

The Warriors responded with a 73-yard touchdown drive as junior quarterback Chase Churchill (Richmond, Mich.) found Davis behind the Michigan Tech secondary for a 55-yard scoring toss.  Milovanski's PAT knotted the game at 10-10 with 11:53 left before intermission.

Following an MTU punt, Wayne State accumulated 37 yards with Milovanski making a career-long 45-yard field goal giving the hosts a 13-10 lead with 7:03 remaining before halftime.

WSU took over at its own 25-yard line after a Huskie punt and went 75 yards in nine plays with sophomore tight end Dayton Keller (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) hauling in his first career touchdown pass, a 34-yard strike from Churchill with just 76 seconds left in the period.

After the kickoff return and an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Warriors, MTU garnered two first downs with Wyble making a 35-yard field goal attempt with 0:30 left before intermission.

Milovanski just missed a 51-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half.

Third Quarter

A fumble by WSU on its first possession of the second half led to a 22-yard scoring drive for the Huskies which tied the contest at 20-20.  Ark and Willis teamed up for a 22-yard pass play on third-and-10.

Warrior sophomore cornerback Koriante Moore (Flint, Mich. / Hamady) had an interception later in the period.  On the first play of the ensuing drive, freshman running back Myren Harris (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Chippewa Valley) went for 70 yards to the MTU 22.  Three plays later Harris scored on a three-yard scamper putting WSU ahead 27-20.

Michigan Tech answered with seven-play, 69-yard scoring drive on the next possession to tie the match-up at 27-27.  William Marano plunged in from a yard out.  The big play of the drive was a 34-yard rush on a reverse by Willis.

Fourth Quarter

Harris had a 75-yard run into the red zone, but a fumble was recovered by the Huskies on the play.

Michigan Tech took possession at its own 15-yard line with 5:25 left in the fourth period and drove 76 yards in 14 plays with Wyble connecting on a 26-yard field goal on the game's final play.
