Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight

Warriors claim 91-57 road win at Davenport.

CALEDONIA, MICH. – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-0 Overall, 3-0 GLIAC) played its first road game of the season Friday evening and recorded a 91-57 victory at Davenport University (0-3 Overall, 0-3 GLIAC).

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors scored the first five points on a triple by sophomore guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and a lay-up by junior forward Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.), who finished the opening stanza with 11 points.

An 8-2 run by the Panthers put the hosts in front at 8-7 just past the mid-point of the quarter.

WSU outscored Davenport 11-5 over the final four-plus minutes, which included two triples by George along with a conventional three-point play to complete her outstanding quarter, to lead 18-13 after 10 minutes.

Wayne State led by 10 (23-13 and 25-15) on a couple of occasions before a DU spurt cut the Warrior advantage to seven (32-25) with just over four minutes remaining before halftime.

WSU ended the first half on an 11-4 run to lead 43-29 at intermission.

Junior guard Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) led all scorers with 11 points in the stanza, which included three triples.

SECOND HALF RECAP
After Davenport trimmed the Wayne State margin to 11 (48-37), the Warriors scored 15 of the next 18 points to lead by 23 (63-40) with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

WSU had a 72-42 lead after 30 minutes after Fugate connected on three shots beyond the arc in the period to finish with 13 points.

Wayne State outscored the Panthers 19-15 over the final 10 minutes to win 91-57.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate tallied a career-high 24 points, which included four triples along with four assists.  George contributed 22 points, seven rebounds and two steals.  It was her third consecutive 20-point performance.  Junior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds.  Miller chipped in with 15 points and a game-high five assists.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Toni Grace had a team-best 13 points, while Scout Nelson added 11 points.  Emily Lange led DU with six rebounds.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 51 percent (33-of-65) from the floor, including 12-of-21 (57 percent) from three-point range.  Meanwhile, Davenport was 19-of-67 (28 percent) from the field, including 4-of-16 (25 percent) from beyond the arc.  Both teams were stellar at the free throw line.  WSU shot 87 percent (13-of-15), with DU making 15 of its 18 attempts (83 percent).
