DETROIT -- In a battle of two top-25 teams, the 14th-ranked Wayne State University Warriors (3-0 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) prevailed on Homecoming by a 27-10 score over the visiting Michigan Tech Huskies (2-1 overall, 1-1 GLIAC), who were ranked 22nd by the AFCA.

WSU has the GLIACs longest active winning streak at seven as it embarks on a two-game road trip with contests at Ohio Dominican (Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.) and Northern Michigan (Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.).

In the end, it was the Warrior defense that prevailed blanking the Huskies for the final 41 minutes of the contest.  MTU entered the contest averaging 192 yards a game on the ground, but the Green Swarm limited the guests to 100 yards on 43 attempts including four sacks of signal caller Tyler Scarlett.

Meanwhile, the WSU offense which generated three first downs over the first 19 minutes of the match and trailed 10-3, recorded 12 first downs the rest of the way and out-rushed the guests 156-100.

MTU opened the scoring on a 32-yard field goal by Garrett Mead which completed a 15-play, 60-yard drive that used up nearly six minutes on the clock.

The Warriors answered as sophomore Stefan Terleckyj (Warren, Mich. / Warren Mott) connected from 38-yards on his first field goal attempt of the season.  The WSU drive covered 39 yards in nine plays with senior running back Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) earning two first downs (one on a reception and the other on the ground).

Following an exchange of punts, the Huskies drove 76 yards for their lone touchdown of the game.  Steve Worthy hauled in a 25-yard scoring toss from Scarlett about four minutes into the second stanza.

The ensuing Warrior drive ended on a fumble, but two plays later Scarlett's pass attempt was deflected and junior defensive tackle Zach Houghton (Haslett, Mich.) had his first career interception.

After a seven-play, 19-yard drive Terleckyj made a 28-yard field goal attempt to pull the hosts within four at 10-6.

MTU punted on its next possession and on the first play junior quarterback Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio / Harvey) hooked up with senior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) on an 80-yard completion as Huskie Quinn Parnell pulled down Burrell at the three.

On second-and-goal, sophomore fullback Chet Privett (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) recorded his second career touchdown reception.  Terleckyj's PAT put WSU ahead 13-10 with 59.6 seconds left before intermission.  Privett's TD catch started a stretch of 24 consecutive points by the Warriors.

On the Huskies' second play of the third quarter, senior safety Jeremy Jones (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Rockford) snatched his 10th career interception.  Two plays later Mohner and Burrell connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass increasing WSU's lead to 20-10.

The next three drives ended in punts before Mohner was intercepted for the first time this season.

Michigan Tech drove to the WSU 25 but on a third-and-five Jones snared his 11th career interception.  It also marked the fourth time in his career he had two picks in a contest.

Following a Warrior punt, MTU moved to the WSU 22 but Mead's 39-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

WSU went three-and-out, but the Warrior defense stopped Akeem Cason on a fourth-and-one near midfield.

Renel broke loose on the first play following the defensive stand for 41 yards, just missing the end zone, but his rush on the ensuing play completed the scoring.

Renel recorded a game-high 91 rushing yards on 17 carries, while sophomore Toney Davis (Muskegon Heights, Mich. / Muskegon) also had 17 attempts and totaled 73 yards.  Cedrick Barber led MTU with 34 yards on eight rushing attempts.

Mohner completed 11-of-23 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, while Scarlett was 19of-32 for 223 yards and a score but was picked off three times and sacked on four others.

Burrell led all receivers with five catches for 148 yards.  Pat Carroll had a team-best five receptions for the Huskies.

In addition to his two interceptions, Jones recorded a game-high 11 tackles (all solo) including one sack.  Senior safety Kenny Loney (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) contributed eight tackles (5-3) including one for loss.  All told, the Warrior defense had nine tackles for loss with junior cornerback Aaron Cornett (South Lyon, Mich.) leading the way with three tackles for loss including two sacks.

Parnell led the Huskies with eight tackles (7-1).
