Men's Tennis Falls 7-0 at 25th-Ranked Embry-Riddle

The Warriors will travel to Rollins for a 10:30 a.m. match on Saturday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (8-2 overall) suffered a 7-0 loss at 25th-ranked Embry-Riddle (6-1 overall) on Thursday.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Karcz and freshman Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) were first off the courts after a 6-2 loss against Alexis Guedy and Lucas Bos at No. 2 doubles.

"Niklas and Luke played a little flat," stated head coach Bryan Morrow.  "Niklas hasn't been playing, so he was kind of rusty.  The wind definitely affected them the most."

Sophomore David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) and freshman Dom Spicer (London, England) fell 6-4 at the first flight versus Juan Ortiz Couder and Andres Donayre.

"David and Dom played a really nice, competitive match against a solid team," commented Bryan Morrow.  "They couldn't quite pull it out.  We were playing in very tough conditions with heat and 30 mile-per hour winds."

At No. 3 doubles, senior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and sophomore Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) lost 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreaker vs. Fernando Alonso and Andrej Omeragic.

"Pierre and Max played a real nice match against a good team," remarked Morrow.  "I am happy with how they played, but they just couldn't quite pull out the win."

SINGLES RESULTS
Laws was first off the courts after falling 6-0, 6-2 to Bos at No. 4 singles.

"Luke had a really rough day for the first time this season," commented Morrow.  "He played a good player and with the wind, he never really found himself today.  Hopefully Luke learned a lot from it."

At No. 2 singles, Rink suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Donayre.

"Max's opponent was really solid," Morrow recalled.  "They had a lot of long points, but unfortunately his opponent won many more than we did and did a great job making difficult shots."

Freshman Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich. / St. Joseph) stepped in at No. 6 singles but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Tim Loerwink.

"Ryan gave it his all, but unfortunately fell a little short," Morrow stated.

At No. 1 singles, Renaudie was edged 6-4, 6-4 by Couder.

"Pierre played a hard-fought match against a solid player," Morrow remarked.  "He played strong.  Dealing with the wind, Pierre did a nice job of mixing and matching.  Unfortunately his opponent was a little too much for him today, but I am really happy with the competitiveness of that match."

Solar was topped 6-4, 6-3 by Alonso at No. 5 singles.

"David competed well and played another solid player," said Morrow.  "Again, we are used to playing inside and, playing an aggressive form of tennis in this wind, that's a hard game to play."

Spicer was last off the courts after falling 6-2, 7-5 to Guedy at No. 3 singles.

"Dom had a nice, long match," recalled Morrow.  "By the end of the first set, Dom was playing well.  I think that this was the best and most complete match that Dom has played all year.  He has gotten really good."

"It was a tough day for the Warriors," commented Morrow.  "Embry-Riddle was very good and we had to play singles without junior Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) again.  Not being an outdoor team and facing teams that play year-round here puts you at a slight disadvantage, especially when the teams also happen to be really good.  Embry-Riddle is one of the top teams in the country and I think that they will finish in the top-15 by the end of the season."
