Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to Parkside

The Warriors led 2-0 before the Rangers stormed back.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (3-4 GLIAC) saw its losing streak reach four matches on Friday night with a five-set defeat against visiting Parkside (1-6 GLIAC).  The Warriors were in control, winning set one (25-15) and set two (25-16) before the Rangers came back to win set three (25-21), set four (25-19) and set five (15-13).

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU started fast and led 7-4 to begin the first set after a combo block by freshman Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) and redshirt junior Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore).  A kill by sophomore Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) extended the home lead to 14-7.  Kills from junior Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Wagner made it 19-12.  UWP trimmed the deficit to five, 20-15 but the Warriors tallied the final five points to take the set 25-15.

Three kills from Wagner sandwiched a service ace from sophomore Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) early in the second set to give the Green & Gold a 9-5 advantage.  Parkside would pull within one, 12-11, but WSU answered by winning the next three points capped off by a kill from redshirt junior Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.).  UWP hung around and trailed 19-16 until Wayne State ended the set on a 6-0 run to win 25-16.

It was more of the same from the home team to start the third set.  WSU led 7-2 after a kill from VanderWal.  However, momentum for the entire match seemed to switch right then and the Rangers would tie the set at 9-9.  WSU answered with a 4-0 rally, including kills from Kray, Wagner, Morrison and redshirt sophomore Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).  UWP would eventually take a 14-13 lead.  The teams continued to trade runs and Wayne State used a 4-0 spurt to regain the lead, 18-14.  The Warriors led 21-20 but Parkside would capture the final five points to win 25-21 and avoid the sweep.

Parkside scored the first five points of the fourth set and led 8-2.  The Rangers held onto a 14-9 advantage and WSU was never able to seize the momentum and UWP led 21-15.  Three straight Parkside errors cut WSU's deficit to three, 21-18.  The Rangers won four of the final five to points to win 25-19 and force a fifth set.

The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair but WSU did lead 4-2 early on.  UWP used a 4-1 rally to take an 8-6 lead.  The set was tied at 10-10, 12-12 and 13-13 before Parkside won the final two points and the match 3-2.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Three Warriors finished with at least 10 kills led by Wagner's 13.  Both Morrison and VanderWal tallied 11.  Duffield posted 38 assists, while Wagner collected a double-double with a team-best 15 digs.  Sophomore Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) totaled 13 digs.
