Men's Basketball Drops First Home Game of 2022

DETROIT -- In the first game inside the Fieldhouse in 2022, the Wayne State University men's basketball program (2-8, 1-6 GLIAC) lost to Michigan Tech (10-3, 6-1 GLIAC) 62-51 on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies started fast and led 11-4 at the 15:28 mark.  The visitor's advantage grew to 21-9.  However, the Warriors used an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to 21-17 with 6:43 left to play.  In his first action of the season, Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) knocked down a triple to spark the rally.  Michigan Tech regained the momentum and led 28-17 at the 4:27 mark.  A bucket from Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) kept WSU close, 30-21, with 3:09 remaining before halftime.  The Huskies would take a 40-24 lead into intermission.

MTU led 45-30 five minutes into the second half.  Back-to-back baskets by Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) made it 47-34 at the 13:21 mark and a jumper by Lewis cut the Huskies' advantage to 11, 47-36, with 12:06 to play.    Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) sunk a 12-footer before Marshall connected from behind the arc to pull the Green & Gold within eight, 49-41, at the 8:36 mark.  Michigan Tech led by double-digits until two free throws by Owens-White made it 53-44 with just under five minutes left in regulation.  Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) hit a late three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, 58-51 but time would run out on the Warriors and MTU captured a 62-51 road win.
