SVSU Softball falls twice at 15th-ranked GVSU

ALLENDALE -- The SVSU Softball team continued on the road Saturday in league action, playing at 15th-ranked Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. The Lakers came away with a sweep in the twinbill, taking the opener 9-0 in five innings before defeating the Cardinals in the nightcap by an 8-3 count.

Game 1

The Lakers scored five runs in the home half of the 2nd inning and added three more in the 3rd, leading 8-0 over the Cardinals. GVSU added another in the 4th and were able to close out for the mercy-shortened win, 9-0.

Alexis Cerven had the only hit for the Cardinals and added a stolen base as well.

Mikayla Alexandrou (4-5) took the loss in the circle. She worked 2.0 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with a walk.

Game 2

The Cardinals led 3-2 after three innings of action, seeing Blasia Moyler drill a solo home run in the 2nd and Jackie Popko add a two-run shot in the top of the 3rd for the lead against two single-run innings from the Lakers.

In the home half of the 4th, GVSU responded with three runs to take a 5-3 edge and it would add a three-run shot in the 6th to make the score 8-3.

That five run lead proved to be the final for the nightcap, as the Lakers claimed the victory.

Popko, Moyler and Sarah Gersch had the hits for the Cards, with Moyler and Popko going yard. Popko had two RBI along with a walk for SVSU.

Hannah Atwell (4-4) got the start and took the loss pitching, tossing 3.1 innings. She let in four runs on seven hits with a pair of walks.
