Lakers Head to the Western U.P. for a pair of GLIAC Games

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team is set to play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games this week on Thursday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 18. Thursday's game is against Michigan Tech University in Houghton, Mich. at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game is against Northern Michigan Wildcats in Marquette, Mich. at 1:00 p.m.

The Lakers (6-9, 3-4 GLIAC)

The Lakers will look to get back in the win column this weekend, as the team's most recent game was a 74-69 loss to Northwood Timberwolves. With the loss, the Lakers overall record dropped to 6-9 overall and a 3-4 mark in GLIAC play. Lake Superior is led by senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins who ranks fifth in the conference in points per game in GLIAC matches (19.4) as well as ninth in the conference in overall points per game (16.1) this season. Collins also leads the Lakers in rebounds per game with 7.6. Freshman Nigel Colvin has been a solid addition to the lineup this season as he has averaged 8.9 points per game this season, and 9.0 points per game in conference games. Sophomores C.J. Robinson (10.5 ppg) and Justin Fischer (4.6 rebounds per game, 4.6 assists per game) have been steady players for the Lakers in their second season.

The Lakers are averaging 73.5 points per game this season with a 43.2 shooting percentage and 32.3 rebounds per game.

Michigan Tech Huskies (11-4, 5-2 GLIAC)

The Michigan Tech Huskies head into Thursday's game coming off a conference win against Purdue Northwest. The Huskies are led by senior Kyle Monroe, averaging 20.9 points per game. Monroe also leads the team in rebounds per game, averaging 6.7. Tommy Lucca is leading the way for the Huskies with 6.8 assists per game.

Michigan Tech is averaging 79.5 points per game in 2019-20 with a 48.4 shooting percentage and 34.1 rebounds per game.

Northern Michigan Wildcats (7-8, 4-3 GLIAC)

The Northern Michigan Wildcats head into Saturday's game coming off a road loss to Wisconsin Parkside. The Wildcats are led by senior guard Sam Taylor with 12.3 points per game, and a 14.9 points per game average in conference play. Center Myles Howard is leading the way in rebounds per game with an average of 7.3 in conference play.

Northern Michigan is averaging 66.6 points per game in 2019-20 with a 43.2 shooting percentage and 32.7 rebounds per game.

The Lakers will return home for a pair of conference games on Thursday, Jan. 23 against Purdue Northwest at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25 against Wisconsin Parkside at 3:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Thursday's game will include a halftime ceremony recognizing the Laker student-athlete who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. Mascot night will be held at the Laker basketball games on Saturday.
