Men's Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision to #2-Columbus State on Final Day of the ITA National Indoors

The Warriors went 1-2 against some of the best competition in Division II this weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (5-3 overall) finished its three day stay in Indianapolis on Sunday evening, falling to #2-ranked Columbus State (3-1 overall) 4-2 in the third-place match at the UIndy Tennis Center.

DOUBLES
The Warriors began the match nicely, snatching the doubles point from the Cougars.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Weisbaden, Germany) picked up their first victory in doubles in the tournament. They won 6-4 over Pietro Martinetti and Javier Cueto Ramos of Columbus State.

Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) played strong once again, handing their opponents a 6-1 loss at No. 2 doubles.

With WSU winning the first two doubles matches, the third one at No. 3 went unfinished. Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) went toe-to-toe with their CSU foes, with the set being knotted at 4-4 when it was called.

SINGLES
The Cougars excelled in singles action, winning five of the six individual matches.

The Wayne State victory came courtesy of Drenth, who gutted out a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Tommaso Schold at the No. 2 spot. It was a nice finish to a strong tournament for the sophomore, who finshed 2-1 in three matches in Indianapolis.

Spicer fell at No. 1 singles to Santiago Perez by matching 6-1 scores in both sets.

Grey dropped a singles match for the first time this season, a three-set defeat at No. 3 singles in which he lost the first (6-3), won the second (6-1), and lost the third (6-2).

At the No. 4 spot, Laws won the first set against Martinetti by a 7-5 mark, but lost the next two (6-4, 6-3) to drop the match.

Kitayama put in a strong effort in the second set after dropping the first 6-1, but the junior fell in straight sets after a 7-5 defeat at No. 5 singles.

With Columbus State already the victor of the match, No. 6 singles went unfinished. Kelt and Justin Welz were locked in a battle, with the WSU freshman winning 6-4 in the first before taking a 6-4 loss in the second. Welz was ahead 5-2 in the third set when the match was called early.
