DETROIT -- The Wayne State university baseball team (10-6 overall) hosted Michigan-Dearborn (3-8 overall) on Tuesday afternoon and the Warriors scored six of their eight at-bats to win 9-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) started the bottom of the second inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk and an error, a bases-loaded walk to junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) plated WSU's first run of the day. In the bottom of the third inning, redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) singled, stole second advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to double the home advantage to 2-0.
A walk to redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) eventually led to him scoring on a throwing error by the Wolverines' first baseman. Following a walk to senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) and a double from junior Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) a Foley single through the right side scored a pair of runs to make it 5-0 after six innings.
After a fly out and a ground out, WSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with three straight walks. Two wild pitchers pushed the Warriors' lead to 7-0. Finkbeiner singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and pinch-runner CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) reached second base on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on another error. Travis sent an RBI single into center field to finish the scoring for WSU.
A leadoff double led to a run for UM-Dearborn in the top of the ninth inning.
AT THE PLATE
Foley, Finkbeiner and redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) all had two hits, while Foley led the team with two RBI.
ON THE MOUND
Junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) (1-1) started and earned his first win as a Warrior by working four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four batters. Junior Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) was the first out of the bullpen and tossed a spotless frame before redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) followed with a perfect sixth inning, which included two Ks. Redshirt sophomore Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) struck out one batter in his scoreless seventh inning.
Redshirt sophomore Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) recorded the first two outs of the eighth inning before redshirt junior Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) collected the final out of the frame with a strikeout. Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) allowed a run and struck out one during his work in the ninth inning.
