The Malone University softball team (5-3-1) dropped both games of its doubleheader at the University of Charleston (WV) on Saturday, the first by the score of 15-5 and the second by a count of 6-1.
The Pioneers trailed 5-0 entering the fourth inning in game one, before striking for five runs to tie the game. Sophomore
Emily Isla delivered the big blow of the inning with a three-run homer, her first long ball of the season. The rally was short-lived, however, as the Golden Eagles struck for four runs in the bottom of the inning and six more in the next frame to seal the 15-5 win in five innings.
Junior
Stephanie Byrne, who pitched the distance, fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
In game two, the Pioneers' bats were silenced by pitcher Morgan Aguirre, who limited Malone to just two hits. Isla and freshman
Mikayla Fowler contributed the hits and sophomore
Katie Snoddy scored the lone Malone run when she came home from third base on a passed ball after reaching base earlier in the inning via a walk.
Junior
Jillian Coyle (4-1) was dealt her first loss of the season giving up six runs on 11 hits in six innings of work.
Malone travels to Salem, Virginia next weekend to participate in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament from Mar. 14-15
