Cardinals drop GLIAC Tournament opener to Panthers

LANSING, Mich. – The 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament opened with No. 6 seed Saginaw Valley State University taking on No. 1 seed Davenport University Thursday at Jackson Field in Lansing, Mich.

The GLIAC regular-season champion Panthers scored the first 11 runs of the game and cruised to an 11-1 win. The loss drops SVSU to 17-16 overall this season and the Cardinals will play an elimination game on Friday.

The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the third inning when the Panthers took advantage of a Cardinal error to score two runs. Davenport got a solo home run in the fourth and a huge blast to over the centerfield wall for two more in the fifth to pull away.

SVSU scored its lone run of the game in the ninth on an RBI from Jaccar Watkins.

Hayden Jatczak (4-4) took the loss on the mound, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs, six earned, on six hits, walking three, and striking out one.

The Cardinals will look to keep their season alive with an elimination game against No. 5 seed Wayne State University at 10 am Friday at Jackson Field.
