Walk-Off Homer Gives Bulldogs Split At Midwest Regional Crossover

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team opened play in the Midwest Regional Crossover event on Friday (Feb. 21) with a split at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.

The Bulldogs suffered a 8-4 setback to Bellarmine (Ky.) in the opener before beating Southern Indiana 8-7 with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap.

In the opening game, Bellarmine took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Knights stretched their lead to 5-1 after three innings of play and added three more in the bottom of the fourth before limiting FSU to only two more runs the rest of the way. BU outhit FSU 10-9 for the game and also benefited from four Bulldog errors in the field.

Both Evelyn Blood and Madison McLeod paced the Bulldogs with two hits apiece while Kaitlyn Orme scored twice. The Bulldogs also got a double from Taylor Buiter.

Senior Abby Highway tossed four innings of action in the circle and gave up eight runs on nine hits with a pair of walks. Kristie Gray threw two innings of action and struck out two with two walks while giving up only a single hit and no runs.

In game two, the Bulldogs struck first with the opening run in the first and the score was tied after three innings of play. The Bulldogs took a 6-3 lead into the fifth, but the Screaming Eagles scored four times to grab the lead before FSU tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. The Bulldogs got the winning run on Orme's home run in the bottom of the seven to garner the triumph.

FSU was led offensively by Kodi Ramirez, who had three hits and scored three runs. Jessica Tucci also posted two hits as did McLeod, who added two RBI's. In addition to Orme's home run, both McLeod and Tucci had doubles and Kylie Winkels tripled for the Bulldogs.

In the pitching circle, Kaitlyn Nugent allowed seven runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds of an inning while walking two and striking out one. Connor Proctor hurled two and one-thirds of an inning, giving up a single hit and no runs overall.

The Bulldogs will continue action in the regional crossover on Saturday (Feb. 22) as they face Lake Erie at 11 a.m. (ET) and Truman State (Mo.) at 3 p.m. (ET).
