DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (5-4 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) continued its six-match home stand on Friday night but lost to Parkside (3-6 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) in five sets. The Warriors were up 2-0 in the match and led the third set 21-12 before the visiting Rangers stormed back to steal a win inside the Matthaei.
HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led early in the first set 6-4 following a block by
Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) and a bad set by Parkside. A kill followed by back-to-back aces from
Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) pushed the advantage to 9-5. The Rangers tied the game at 10-10 and led 15-13. A 7-1 run from the Green & Gold gave the home team a 22-18 lead. WSU would win the opening set 25-18 on two kills from Krenz.
Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) put WSU up 6-2 in the second set with consecutive aces. Two attacking errors from UWP pushed the margin to 12-8 and VanderWal collected a kill to make it 14-9.
Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) tallied a point and gave the Warriors a 19-12 advantage.
Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) got in on the action and pushed the lead to 21-13 before Wayne State would secure a 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 victory.
It was more of the same for WSU in the third set as it led 12-15 and Wagner capped a 6-0 run with back-to-back kills.
Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) served an ace to make it 20-10 and VanderWal posted a kill to push the advantage to 21-12. However, the Rangers would win 13 of the next 15 points and shock WSU with a 25-23 set three win.
The momentum had firmly shifted to Parkside and it powered the visitors to a 9-1 lead to begin the fourth set. A combo block from Farris and Krenz gave WSU a 19-18 lead and capped a 6-0 rally. The Warriors held onto a 21-20 lead before UWP ended the set on a 5-1 run and forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory.
Parkside the led the fifth and final set 4-2 and 7-5. A block by
Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) and Krenz tied the set at 7-7. The set was tied at 8-8 but the Rangers won the final seven points to best WSU 15-8 and 3-2.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Krenz tallied 16 kills on 32 swings to post a .438 hitting percentage. Wagner had 12 kills, while VanderWal finished with 11.
Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 49 assists and Benoit anchored the defense with 14 digs.
