Softball Splits On Wednesday

Warriors win game one 19-5; falls 5-3 in nightcap.

Kissimmee, Fla.  -- The Wayne State University softball team (6-8 overall) split a pair of contests on Wednesday defeating the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons (2-10) 19-5 in game one, before falling to the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (13-9) 5-3 in the nightcap.

The Warriors pounded out 17 hits with six different players having a multiple-hit game versus MSU-Moorhead.

WSU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) doubled to left center with one out, advance to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out error by MSUM.

The Dragons would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame off Warrior starter Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.).  A leadoff double, two ground outs and back-to-back doubles produced the two runs.

Wayne State answered with 11 runs on seven hits, plus three walks in the top of the second.  Freshman outfielder Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) singled and went to second on a walk to sophomore Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont.).  After a ground out, Spano scored on an error.  Sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) added an RBI single to put WSU in front for good.

Senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) and Fulton each stole a pair of bases during White's at bat to produce another run.  Senior Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had an RBI single scoring Fulton following the walk to White.  Senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) walked to load the bases and junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) delivered a two-run double to centerfield.  Spano followed with a two-run single and after a walk to Ingratta, sophomore catcher Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) smacked her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to centerfield.

Wayne State added a single run in the third on a pair of walks and an RBI double by Spano, and four runs in the fourth with freshman Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) contributing a two-run double and Ingratta adding a two-run single.  WSU's final two runs came in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI double by freshman Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) and an RBI single by Bryce.

The Dragons tallied one run in the third on a pair of doubles and added two more in the fifth on three singles and a walk.

Wickerham went the distance in the circle to improve to 2-0.  She had one walk and one strikeout, while allowing five earned runs on nine hits.

Ten different Warrior batters had at least one RBI in the contest.

In the nightcap, Wayne State scored three times in the bottom of the first but the Bulldogs would hold the Warriors scoreless the rest of the way and score five times to down WSU 5-3.

Fulton reached on an error to begin the bottom of the first and White was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a one-out wild pitch before Ryan delivered a two-run double to left.  Foreman singled to put runners on the corners and with two outs, Hilton added an RBI single to centerfield.

Wayne State would have just four hits the rest of the game, and no more than one base runner in any inning.

UMD scored four times in the top of the fourth on three singles, a double, a walk and a WSU error.

The game's final run was scored in the top of the fifth on a hit by pitch, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out RBI single.
