Volleyball Sweeps SVSU

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (8-5, 2-3 GLIAC) defeated Saginaw Valley State (8-5, 4-1 GLIAC), handing the Cardinals their first league loss of the season.  The Warriors took set one 28-26, set two 25-8 and set three 25-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals led the opening set 6-4 and eventually 13-8.  With SVSU up 18-14, the Warriors won five straight points tot ake a 19-18 advantage.  Back-to-back kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) gave the Green & Gold a 22-21 lead.  Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) gave the home team a 24-23 lead but the Cards won the next two points.  A point by VanderWal and a kill from Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) made it 26-25 but SVSU broke serve again and tied the game at 26-26.  Another spike by Morrison plus an ace from Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) ended the set and gave Wayne State an exciting 28-26 victory.

The Warriors started fast in the second set leading 5-1 after a block by Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and Shell.  Another block from the same duo made it 9-2.  The defense continued to supplement the offense and a block by Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) and VanderWal stretched WSU's advantage to 13-5.  Giroux sparked a 12-1 run to end the set.  Over that stretch, she tallied three kills and a block.

Wayne State opened the third set leading 7-3 after back-to-back kills from Shell.  A service ace by Palazzolo extended the home advantage to 11-4.  A point by Withun made it 16-10 before SVSU trimmed its deficit to 16-14 with a 4-0 rally.  WSU regained control and led 21-15 and 22-17.  Following two points by the Cardinals, WSU won the next three points, including consecutive kills by Giroux to complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Giroux and VanderWal led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills each, while Giroux hit .389.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 33 assists and Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) posted 16 digs.

ONE BIG THING
WSU's defense held SVSU to a -.009 hitting percentage, totaling 12 blocks.
