Volleyball Falls in Final Home Match of the Season to Wayne State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team fell in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday, Oct. 30 by a final score of 3-0. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 2-10 in conference play after losing the match by scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-13. 

The Lakers and Warriors were even through the beginning of the first set as the teams were tied at four. After Camdyn Odykirk recorded a kill to come within a point of the Warriors (6-5), the visitors went on a run of five straight points to take an 11-5 lead. Senior Bethany Wilson led the Lakers through the middle stage of the set, as she totaled three kills but the Warrior offense built a 16-8 lead over the Lakers. Wayne State's offense closed out the set against the Lakers by a score of 25-14. 

The Lakers fell behind early in the second set as the Warriors took an 8-1 lead. As the set played on, Warriors continued to dominate the game and held an eight point lead over the Lakers (16-8). Lake Superior State scored four out of five points late in the set as the team tried to make a comeback but the Warriors won the set by a score of 25-14 to take a 2-0 lead. 

Wayne State took the final set by a score of 25-13. The Lakers tried to rally as the team came back from a 21-6 deficit as the home team scored eight of the final 12 points in the set. 

Stat Leaders: Senior Bethany Wilson had a solid match for the Lakers in her final home game as she recorded eight kills on 14 attempts to lead the team with a .429 hitting percentage. Senior setter Halle Grulke, also playing in her final home match, led the team with 16 assists in the match. 

Defensively, the Lakers were led by their libero, freshman Ally Lasley, who posted a team-leading 12 digs in the match while also recording a service ace. Wilson added four blocks in the match to lead the team in the category.

Up Next

Next weekend, the Lakers will travel across the Upper Peninsula to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies and Northern Michigan Wildcats. Lake Superior will play at Northern Michigan in Marquette, Mich. on Friday, Nov. 5 at 4:00 p.m. and match up against the Huskies at 2:00 p.m. in Houghton, Mich. on Saturday, Nov. 6.
