Bearcats pull away in second half on Concordia's senior night

Bears led early, pulled within two early in second half before falling 22-10

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Playing in their first outdoor game of the season and the second in two years at Sea Foam Stadium, Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (7-8, 4-7 GLIAC) fell 22-10 to McKendree University (7-9, 6-5 GLIAC) on a crisp, windy spring evening that included brief rain showers. Prior to the game, Concordia honored its first and lone senior, Kallie LaValle for her contributions to the program.

The loss for Concordia eliminates the Golden Bears from playoff contention in their first year in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference, which advances the top four teams in the final regular season standings to the conference tournament. The second year program with just two upper classmen was able to remain in contention until the final weekend of the regular season and will host #12 Indianapolis (13-3, 9-2 GLIAC), the second seed in the conference tournament, on Sunday at noon in the season finale at Sea Foam Stadium.

McKendree used a 7-1 run in the middle of the first half covering nearly 15 minutes and a 9-1 run in the middle of the second half covering nearly 17 minutes to first build its lead, then pull away after CSP held the edge in the early minutes.

Concordia, which held a 9-6 second half lead before falling 11-10 at McKendree in the first meeting on April 6, jumped out to a strong start in tonight's game once again. After the Bearcats scored two of the first three goals for a quick 2-1 lead in the first five minutes, the Golden Bears burst free for three straight goals and a 4-2 lead 8:25 into the contest.

Sophomore Maddie Hentges assisted on the last two goals of the run, and the four goals were scored by four different Golden Bears to get things going. The two assists gave her three points in the opening eight and a half minutes of play, as she scored her 41st goal in the seventh minute and the two assists give her a new team record of 19 on the season.

McKendree responded with a four goal run of its own to reclaim a two goal lead at 15:59 before sophomore Alina Boyce scored her second of three goals in the game (all in the first half) on a free position shot to keep the game close at 6-5.

McKendree went on another spurt, though, scoring three straight to extend its lead to the largest of the game, 9-5 at 24:57 in the first half.

The Bears responded with back-to-back goals in the 28th and 29th minute, looking to keep the halftime margin tight before McKendree netted one in 20 seconds after Boyce registered her hat trick for a 10-7 halftime lead.

In the second half, Concordia opened the scoring to trim the lead to two once again as freshman Margot Coomes delivered an assist to junior Sheala Osborne to make it a 10-8 contest.

After the teams played tight for nearly four minutes, the Bearcats started a run in the sixth minute the put the game in jeopardy with four straight goals in a span of five and a half minutes to claim a six goal advantage with under 20 minutes to play.

Although freshman Raelyn Korinek scored her second goal of the game in the 13th minute, McKendree continued its run with five more goals in what amounted to a 9-1 stretch of lacrosse spanning nearly 17 minutes of play to build a 19-9 lead with eight minutes to play in the game.

Korinek had three points, giving her 30 goals and four assists on the season. The hat trick for Boyce was her fifth of the year, putting her at 23 goals in 12 games. Sophomore Kailey Heinl had a two goal game to give her 32 on the season including 12 multi-goal performances in 15 games.

Osborne had a pair of points as well, a goal and an assist and led CSP on the draw with six draw controls, a new career high.

The team needed Osborne to have the career day on the draw, as well, as she accounted for half of the team's 12 draw controls in the only real statistic that was not closely contest in the game. McKendree was consistent on the draw throughout with a 21-12 advantage despite Concordia winning the first two draws of the game.

Emily Nelson picked up 13 draw controls for the Bearcats, adding six points (3g, 3a) while Paige Salthouse had a game-high nine points (7g, 2a) and Dana DiPasquale had seven points (4g, 3a).

The final shot margin was 48-40 in favor of McKendree, keeping all three goalies busy in the game. Sophomore Katie Lottsfeldt had another strong effort protecting the net with 10 first half saves leading to seven ground balls. It's her fifth double-digit save effort of the year and the .500 save percentage raises her season total to .434. She was backed up by freshman Claire Hagen who produced six saves, just two shy of her previous high and the fourth most of the year. She also produced four ground balls.

Their counterpart, Collin Patton had 17 saves and allowed 10 goals to secure the win.

The teams were nearly locked in ground balls (32-31 MCK), clears (MCK 18-20, CSP 17-18), fouls (MCK 26, CSP 23) and turnovers (MCK 18, CSP 20) in a contest that didn't fully reflect the final goal margin.
