Women's Basketball Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Defeat Saginaw Valley State

The Warriors outscored the Cardinals by 10 (52-42) in the final 20 minutes.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (11-5 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) overcame cold shooting and a first half deficit to down visiting Saginaw Valley State (4-12 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) 74-69 on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The lone two baskets in the first 5:12 of game action came on a jumper from redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) 23 seconds into the contest and a lay-up from Lydia Meredith 2:04 into the stanza.  Junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) broke the three-plus minute scoring drought via a pair of free throws, before another lay-up from Tyler Scheid knotted the score 4-4.  That would be the first of eight straight points for the Cardinals between 4:04 and 1:52 remaining, which put the guests ahead by six (10-4).  WSU earned the next three points on foul shots, before Makayla Mau nailed a jumper to put Saginaw Valley State up by five (12-7) following 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
The Warriors and Cardinals each totaled 10 points apiece in the opening 6:28 before the second quarter media timeout, which helped the visitors maintain a five-point advantage (22-17).  The lead would grow to as many as eight (25-17) after a free throw by Aleshia Jones and a lay-up from Scheid.  Senior forward ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford (Pensacola State / Cleveland State)) would connect on a jumper and freshman guard Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) a three-pointer in the final 1:12 of the half, but SVSU would take a 27-22 edge into the break.

The Warriors shot 29 percent (6-of-21) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

Third Quarter
In the highest-scoring frame of the afternoon, the Green and Gold outpaced Saginaw Valley State 29-24 in the 10 minute period.  WSU was unable to gain any ground in the first 5:19, however, as the two squads matched one another shot-for-shot in each notching 13 points in the span.  The Warriors cut the lead to three several times between 4:34 and 1:10 left to play, but the team finally was able to draw back even with the Cardinals during the quarter's final minute.  Sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) and Fugate would each sink a pair of foul shots to erase a 51-47 SVSU lead and send the contest into the final stanza deadlocked at 51-51.

Fourth Quarter
With the score even, it became a battle of winning the final 10 minute period.  A lay-up from Tripp gave WSU a 57-56 lead with 8:23 left and was the first of four such lead changes in the first five minutes of the quarter.  Jones would earn five points in a row for the Cardinals between 6:22 and 5:57 left to play, which put the visitors up by four (65-61).  The Warriors would then notch the next six points on made field goals from Lutchka, Fugate, and sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).

Saginaw Valley State would garner its final lead of the game (69-67) with 2:58 left following a lay-up from Emma Dziezgowski and a jumper from Victoria Stafford, but the Cardinals would not score again.  WSU would end the contest on a 7-0 run to secure the five-point triumph.  Tripp's lay-up and subsequent free throw with 1:56 to play served as the game-tying and go-ahead baskets, while lay-ups by Thompson and Lutchka put the finishing touches on the victory.
