Men's Basketball Snaps Losing Streak with Impressive Win

The Warriors led all 40 minutes on Thursday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-11, 2-9 GLIAC) ended a seven-game losing streak on Thursday night with a 68-60 victory over Lake Superior State (10-6, 5-5 GLIAC).  The Warriors led from beginning to end for their third win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) returned to the lineup from an injury and made an immediate impact.  He gave WSU a 8-4 lead at the 17:22 mark with a layup.  Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) sunk a triple to push the home advantage to 14-4 with just over 15 minutes to play.  Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) kept the momentum going for the Green & Gold and his jumper made it 16-4.  David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) grabbed an offensive rebound and tallied two points, giving WSU a 25-10 lead at the 8:52 mark.  After the Lakers trimmed the deficit to seven, a jumper from Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) slowed the rally with 2:54 to play before the break.  A bucket from Cortez Jackson (Harper Woods, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lake Shore) pushed Wayne State in front, 31-20 and the Warriors led 33-25 at halftime.

LSSU started the second half fast and made it a three-point game, 34-31, at the 16:33 mark after a Kemon Basket basket.  It looked like it was going to be another game where WSU struggled in the second half but WSU regained control and a fast break layup by Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) gave the home team a 38-31 advantage with 15:20 remaining.  The crowd was energized by a dunk from Grant over a LSSU defender followed by a slam by Hughes to give Wayne State a 51-39 lead at the 8:19 mark.  A long-range jumper by Malek Adams pulled the Lakers within six, 60-54, with 3:24 left in the contest.  WSU saw its lead shrink to five with under a minute to play but free throws by Owens-White, Lewis and Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) salted the game away for the Green & Gold.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lewis had 16 points to go with nine rebounds, while Neely finished with 13 points and a game-high seven assists.
