#2 Ferris State Pitches Homecoming Shutout To Stay Perfect On The Year

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally second-ranked Ferris State University football squad pitched a shutout on Saturday (Sept. 25) as the Bulldogs earned a 38-0 homecoming triumph over West Michigan rival Davenport before a large and enthusiastic crowd at Top Taggart Field.

The Bulldog defense limited Davenport to only 163 total yards, including only 57 in the air, while improving to 4-0 overall this season. The victory was FSU's 32nd consecutive regular-season win dating back to 2017.

While the defense dominated, the offense rolled up 475 yards and scored 38 points over three periods following a scoreless opening frame.

The Bulldogs found the scoreboard first with only 3:23 left in the first half as they drove 76 yards in 12 plays to find paydirt on a three-yard TD run from tailback Marvin Campbell.

The lead grew to 14-0 at halftime after FSU scored again with only 15 seconds remaining in the half on a 10-yard scoring pass from quarterback Evan Cummins to wideout Tyrese Hunt-Thompson. It finished a 14-play, 70-yard FSU jaunt.

In the second half, Ferris State pushed the margin to three scores when Cummins found wide receiver Brandon Childress on a 28-yard scoring throw, which was his first touchdown in a Bulldog uniform. That finished a nine-play drive that started at the Bulldogs' own one-yard line and covered 99 yards.

Hunt-Thompson added his second touchdown of the day with 13:44 to play when he raced into the endzone on a 25-yard scoring run to finish a four-play, 44-yard march.

FSU later added a 15-yard scoring throw from signal caller Mylik Mitchell to tailback Jeremy Burrell with 9:25 left in the game and capped the scoring when Jermaine Roemer hit a 17-yard field goal with 5:14 to play.

Mitchell earned the start at quarterback for the Bulldogs and completed 16-of-24 passes for 194 yards with Cummins throwing for 138 yards on eight-of-14 passing. After having seven turnovers last week in an overtime home win over Saginaw Valley State, the Bulldogs did not commit a turnover in Saturday's victory.

In the receiving game, Marcus Taylor caught eight passes for 101 yards for FSU with Hunt-Thompson making four grabs for 81 yards. Tyler Minor led the Bulldogs on the ground with seven carries for 48 yards.

Defensively, senior lineback Liam Daly paced FSU with eight total stops in the triumph.

The contest was a non-league game between the two schools as part of the GLIAC's scheduling system with Ferris State slated to pay a return visit to Davenport for the league matchup later this year on Nov. 6 in Caledonia.

The Bulldogs open a one-month road stretch next Saturday, Oct. 2, at Northwood with the league kickoff set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Midland.
