Fast Start Propels Women's Basketball To 82-64 Triumph Over Walsh

Cherney records game-high totals of 25 points and 17 rebounds.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (2-0 overall) scored the first six points of the game and later had a 12-0 run in the first period and led 30-8 after 10 minutes in posting an 82-64 victory over Walsh University (1-1 overall) in the final game of the 2021 GLIAC/GMAC Challenge at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  The visiting Cavaliers were tabbed as the pre-season favorite in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After a pair of free throws by graduate student Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.), senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) had back-to-back baskets in a 25-second span to make it 6-0.  The visiting Cavaliers would cut their deficit to four points on two occasions (6-2, and 8-4), but triples by junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) sandwiched around two foul shots by Walsh, pushed the lead to eight (14-6) just four minutes into the contest.  The 12 consecutive WSU points came courtesy of a Perez lay-up, a jumper by redshirt junior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day), another Perez lay-up and a triple by senior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.).  Following a Walsh basket by Quionche Carter, Wayne State tallied the final seven points of the opening stanza for a 30-8 advantage after 10 minutes.  The Warriors shot 52 percent (12-of-23) from the floor, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, while the Cavaliers were held to 19 percent (3-of-16) shooting, including 0-for-5 from three-point range.  Perez and Fugate each notched eight points in the period.

Second Quarter
Wayne State extended its lead to 24 (32-8) on a bucket by Cherney, and the WSU margin was never fewer than 21 before intermission.  The Warriors had a 14-12 scoring advantage in the second period, led by Cherney's six points.  Morgan McMillen had five of Walsh's 12 points in the stanza.

Third Quarter
Cater made two foul shots to start the second half, but Wayne State answered with a 7-2 run, which included five points by Cherney on a lay-up and a triple.  With the Warriors leading by 26 (53-27) near the mid-point of the period, the Cavaliers had a 9-0 spurt to cut their deficit to 17 (53-36).  After five consecutive points by WSU, Walsh ended the stanza with a triple by McMillen.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State began the final period with a 19-point lead (58-39) and Walsh would get no closer than 15 (59-44, and 64-49) the rest of the way.

TEAM STATS
