Concordia scores first win over ranked opponent

Seifert dishes out five assists to break program single game record

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul is off to its best start in team history (3-0), securing a 15-4 win over #14 Colorado Mesa (0-2) on Friday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

The win increases Concordia's home winning streak to four games and is the first win against a nationally ranked Division II opponent in team history, snapping a 13-game losing streak against ranked opponents.

Concordia returns to the Concordia Dome on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against Lewis University, looking to keep its perfect season and home winning streak intact.

Junior Lex Seifert set the team record for most assists in a game, dishing out five as the Golden Bears had nine assists on their 15 goals on the afternoon. She found senior Maddie Hentges three times in the first half alone with their first connection putting Concordia ahead 4-0 midway through the first half.

After Colorado Mesa scored at 13:02 on a Maeve Hungerford free position shot, Hentges scored three in a row including a pair of Seifert assists as part of a 10-0 run to take control of the game for a 14-1 lead with 22:31 to play in the contest.

Hentges had a big performance with six goals, tied for the second most in a game in team history. She had one more point than Seifert and senior Alina Boyce with Boyce chipping in three goals, two assists and five ground balls.

The Golden Bears stormed out to the advantage thanks in large part to their dominance of the draw, securing the first eight draw controls of the game, a 9-2 edge in the first and 11 of the first 13 draws before a 15-6 final margin. Junior Sarah Pierson led the charge with nine, just one shy of the program single game record, while adding a pair of goals and ground balls.

Concordia also had a decisive edge on both ends in clear attempts, securing 18-of-19 while disrupting the Mavericks to just 16-of-28. Concordia had a 37-21 edge in ground balls and committed seven fewer turnovers (23-30)

It led to a lopsided final shot chart, with Concordia attempting 42 total shots to Colorado Mesa's 13 which matched Hentges individual total for the game.

Of CMU's 13 shots, 11 were on target but senior goalie Katie Lottsfeldt registered a .833 save percentage with five saves and one goal allowed in the first 42:39 of play while junior Claire Hagen backed her up by making two more saves in 17:21 of play. Lottsfeldt added three ground balls and another caused turnover while Hagen had a pair of ground balls.

Lottsfeldt has a .719 save percentage through the first three games, including a 3.82 goals against average with 23 saves.

Eight different Golden Bears scored at least a point in a continued display of a balanced offensive team attack with six of those players registering multiple points. Juniors Katie Moynihan (2g) and Margot Coomes (1g, 1a) each had two points with Coomes adding three ground balls and a team-high three caused turnovers while Moynihan had two of each.

Concordia's starting defenders of Lexi Stanley, Cassidy Leininger, Kylie Christensen, Sara Stickler and Nicole Kuhn combined for 11 ground balls and eight caused turnovers and all five players had at least one of each.

The Golden Bears put up strong team statistics in the following areas:
  • 37 ground balls, 3rd most in team history
  • 19 caused turnovers, 5th most in team history
  • 42 shots, 6th most in team history
The Mavericks were led by Kenzie Blackwell's two goals while Hungerford had a goal and an assist.
