Golden Bears run with Rollins, fall short in second half

Davidson scores three goals in Florida finale for CSP

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (4-5) competed hard with #8th-ranked Rollins College (5-0) on Thursday evening at Barker Family Stadium, but fell short 14-6 in the third and final spring trip contest in Florida.

The game was scheduled for a 4 p.m. start in the local area, but late afternoon thunderstorms forced a lightning delay that kept the teams off the field for over an hour with an eventual 5:20 p.m. start time.

The Golden Bears wrap up their non-conference season with a 4-5 record including four games against nationally-ranked opponents. They'll open up GLIAC play next Friday, March 18 with a home game against Northern Michigan at 6 p.m. at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.

The Tars showed no signs of rust out of the delay, winning the opening draw and scoring 14 seconds into play.

But Concordia responded, with Maddy Seifert scoring 45 seconds later. Concordia then took the upper hand in the contest just over two minutes later when Delaney Davidson scored her first of three goals to give the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead just over three minutes into the game.

The lead held at 2-1 for nearly eight minutes, when Rollins finally tied the game with 3:54 to play in the quarter.

The game once again stayed knotted for nearly eight more minutes, including a 2-2 score at the quarter break, when Rollins took the lead back 3-2 with 11:13 to play in the second quarter.

The defensive battle featured five saves by goalie Candace McDole in the first 17-plus minutes of play, keeping Rollins out of the net and the Golden Bears in the game.

A minute later, with 10:02 to play in the first half, Molly Moynihan re-tied the score at 3-3. The game stayed tied for two more minutes when Rollins scored the first of two goals to close out the quarter for a 5-3 halftime lead.

Rollins flexed their ranking from there, it was the start of a 7-0 scoring run that included the first five goals of the third quarter and a 10-3 lead midway through the third.

Concordia continued to claw back, with Taylor Preece and Davidson each scoring in a 2-1 spurt for CSP to cut it bak to a six goal game, 11-5 late in the third quarter before Rollins scored two more to seal the win.

Davidson finished with four points, scoring three goals and adding an assist and has a team-high 25 goals on the year. McDole had seven saves on the night, pushing her season total to 62 in across eight games (six starts) in the cage.

Concordia held firm on the draw, with Rollins holding a slight 14-10 advantage with three Golden Bears, Molly Moynihan, Hailey Hartlage and Mary Keating nabbing all 10 led by Moynihan's four with Hartlage and Keating picking up three each. Moynihan, Keating and McDole also led CSP with three ground balls each.

Rollins was led by Caroline Gastonguay's seven points, with four goals and three assists while Paige Kienle added three goals off the bench. Goalie Rachel Schlesinger picked up the win in the net, saving six shots on the night.
