Women's Tennis Claims Seventh Straight Victory With 7-0 Blanking of Southwest Baptist

The Warriors shut out their opponent for a fourth time this spring.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (7-0 overall) grabbed its seventh straight victory on Friday as the team downed Southwest Baptist (1-4 overall) 7-0 at the neutral site Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.

DOUBLES
After not winning either of the two doubles points in last weekend's action, the Warriors rebounded and claimed the first point this afternoon.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) were the first pairing to finish, winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

The Green and Gold finished off doubles with matching 6-3 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) moved to 4-1 as a doubles duo, handling Paula Ballesteros and Elsa Pascual at No. 1.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) were victorious at No. 2 doubles, playing together for the first time in the spring slate of matches.

SINGLES
WSU finished off the clean sweep with all six singles points. The order of finish went one through six, respectively.

Ruyssen won 6-3, 6-1 over Ballesteros from the No. 1 spot, moving her to a spotless 7-0 record in the first seven contests.

Komar recovered from a 0-6 setback in the second set (after winning the first set 6-2) to claim the third set 6-1 and the point for the Warriors at No. 2.

Also putting in a great effort was Arafat, who suffered a setback (3-6) in the first set, but rallied back and won 6-4 and 6-3 in the final two to complete the comeback.

Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and opponent Lola Cincunegui both split the first two sets, and the redshirt freshman Warrior came out on top in a battle to 10-point tiebreaker, 10-4, to win at the No. 4 spot.

Wayne State make it a sweep with stellar performances at No. 5 and No. 6. Szpakowska (6-2, 6-1) and Weekes (6-3, 6-2) both picked up triumphs in straight sets over Bearcat rivals.

FROM THE PLAYERS
"The team had a good win to start of the weekend. We gain more confidence and become more comfortable as we move through the season. Being a freshman, I've been able to learn and grow with the guidance of our upperclassmen. We have a long and tough weekend still ahead of us, but we're excited to compete hard," said Malak Arafat
