Ferris State Volleyball Claims Big GLIAC Road Victory In Showdown At Michigan Tech

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad scored a big Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory on Friday night (Nov. 8) as the Bulldogs topped Michigan Tech 3-2 in a battle of nationally-ranked squads in Houghton.

Ferris State claimed the win by taking the fifth set 15-8 overall while improving to 20-5 this season and 12-2 in GLIAC action. FSU won the first set 25-16 before MTU bounced back to take sets two and three by scores of 25-21 and 25-23. The Bulldogs then forged the deciding frame with a 25-21 triumph in the fourth.

FSU completed a regular-season sweep over the division-leading Huskies behind the play of senior hitter Allyson Cappel, who had 25 kills and 14 digs. Senior Courtney Brewer also had a big performance with 22 kills and 13 digs while the Bulldogs received 17 kills and 24 digs from junior Katie O'Connell.

Ferris State senior setter Maeve Grimes totaled 65 assists and 15 digs with libero Nina Gorgijevska adding 27 digs defensively.

The Bulldogs posted a .302 hitting figure with 79 kills overall to go with 97 digs, 12 block assists, five aces and two solo blocks.

Meanwhile, the Huskies hit .221 for the match and finished with 61 kills, 90 digs, 10 block assists and two solo blocks. Olivia Ghormley and MacAulay Petersen both finished with 12 kills while Megan Utlak posted 30 digs.

With the win, the Bulldogs now hold a slim lead over both Ashland and Michigan Tech atop the GLIAC standings. FSU is 12-2 overall with both the Huskies and the Eagles at 11-2 on the year.

Ferris State, which has two regular-season matches remaining, visits Northern Michigan on Saturday (Nov. 9) for a 4 p.m. (ET) GLIAC contest in Marquette.
