Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale to Michigan Tech

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (19-7 overall, 11-4 GLIAC) fell in three sets to GLIAC champions Michigan Tech (22-5 overall, 14-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  WSU has its sights set on its first trip to the NCAA postseason since 1994 and for just the third time in program history.

Prior to the match seniors and co-captains Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) were recognized in a Senior Day ceremony with their families.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A kill from Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) gave WSU an early 5-3 lead in set one.  The home advantage grew to 11-5 following a pair of kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and a combo block from VanderWal and Kray.  The Huskies used a 4-1 run to pull within three, 14-11.  The Warriors responded with a 4-0 rally to take an 18-11 lead.  The spurt was powered by great service from Malewicz.  A block by Wagner and Kray pushed Wayne State's lead to 21-14.  However, MTU would storm back to take a 23-22 lead, propelled by a 9-1 run.  A point by Wagner tied the set at 23-23.  Michigan Tech won the final two points to take a 1-0 match lead.

Wayne State started strong again in the second set, leading 5-4 after a Malewicz spike.  MTU answered and led 13-7 following a 7-0 run.  WSU used kills from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.), Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) to trim the deficit to one, 13-12.  Tech led 20-14, 24-16 and eventually won 25-17.

The third set was tied at 5-5 after a point from Wagner.  A Shell kill kept the Green & Gold close at 11-9 but the momentum stayed with the Huskies.  The visitor's margin grew to 20-14 and 22-15.  After MTU took a 24-19 lead, the Warriors would win three consecutive points, including a pair of kills from Wagner, to make it 24-22.  The comeback stopped there as Michigan Tech sealed the victory, 25-22.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wagner had a team-high 11 kills, while Duffield tallied 24 helpers.  Wagner also had 11 digs as did Malewicz.

UP NEXT
WSU is set to host a home playoff match for the first time since 2010.  SVSU will visit the Matthaei on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM for a GLIAC quarterfinal contest.  The top remaining seed will host the semifinal and championships matchups.
