Lakers Hold Off Second Half Surge by Purdue Northwest for a Home Victory

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team snapped its losing streak with a 72-59 victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Purdue Northwest on Thursday, Jan. 23 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. 

The first half started with a defensive steal by freshman guard Nigel Colvin who would then capitalize on the play as he made a three-point jump shot to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Five minutes into the first half, the Lakers would get a spark from Jackson Schrameyer as he made a three-point shot to bring the Lakers within a point (8-7) of the Pride. Schrameyer would score the next Laker points as recorded a layup less than a minute later to again bring the Lakers within a point (10-9) and would follow a few minutes later with his second three-pointer of the half to give the Lakers the lead 15-13. 

The Lakers lead would grow to eight points at 10:36 of the half when Colvin made a three-point basket to go ahead 23-15. Back-to-back three points from Brandon Allen and Justin Fischer would give the Lakers a 32-21 point advantage with five minutes to play in the half. The Lakers would close out the first half of play with a 13 point lead over the Pride, 39-26.

In the second half, Purdue Northwest would get a strong start as the Pride scored the first five points of the half to cut the Lakers lead to eight points (39-31). The two conference rivals would trade field goals over the next few minutes keeping the Lakers ahead by eight points after the first five minutes of play in the half. 

The Pride would start their comeback at 12:17 of the second half when Chandler Spring made a three-point shot to bring the game within four points (45-41). Spring's three-pointer would start a string of 13 straight points from the Pride to take a 50-45 lead with 8:23 left in the half. The Lakers would have an answer for the push from the Pride in the next stretch of play. Lake State would score seven straight points to regain the lead, 52-50 with 6:57 to go in the game. 

After Spring gave Purdue Northwest a 53-52 lead, Ke'Montrece Collins would take the game into his hands he scored consecutive three-pointers to put the Lakers back on top by five points (58-53). With 3:43 left in the game, the Lakers were up by seven points. The Lakers would regain a double digit lead with 3:20 left in regulation as Collins added another three-point shot to put the game out of reach for the Pride (63-53). 

The game ended with the Lakers clinching the conference win by a score of 72-59 as the Lakers were able to hold off the Pride's second half surge and take the home victory.

Collins finished the game with a team-leading 15 points, with 13 coming in the second half. Schrameyer's 12 points in the game, all coming in the first half, ranked second among the Lakers. Ashton Sherrell led the Lakers in rebounds with five and C.J. Robinson added five assists in the win for Lake State.

The Lakers will look to add another GLIAC win this weekend with a game on Saturday, Jan. 25 against Wisconsin Parkside at 3:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Mascot day will be held at the Laker basketball games on Saturday.
