Men's Basketball Takes No. 7 Ashland to the Wire

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-12 overall, 3-8 GLIAC) hosted seventh-ranked Ashland (18-1 overall, 10-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors dropped another close contest. 63-61, as Ashland's Ben Haraway hit a tough jumper with two seconds left, giving the Eagles a two-point victory.  The Warriors trailed by 15 with 10 minutes to play in the second half but a Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) layup tied the game at 61-61 at the 19-second mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles led 6-2 at the arrival of the game's first media timeout at the 15:36 mark.  A jumper from Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) brought WSU within four, 12-8, with 13:14 to play in the opening half.  Davis trimmed the visitors' lead to 14-12 with a mid-range basket at the 11:15 mark.  Two free throws by Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) kept the Warriors close at 20-14 with 6:34 left before halftime.  Cochran followed with back-to-back buckets, bringing WSU within two, 20-18.  Owens-White connected twice from the charity stripe, cutting the deficit to 26-24 at the 2:42 mark but Ashland ended the stanza on a 9-0 run to take a 35-24 lead into the locker rooms.

Ashland continued to lead by 11 at the 16:11 mark of the second half after a layup by Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).  A tough two-pointer from Davis kept the margin at 10, 42-32, with 13:40 left to play.  Wayne State had opportunities to cut the margin to single digits but AU led 49-37 at the 10:19 mark after Cochran connected on one of two freebies.  Henderson used an up-and-under move to make it 54-44 with 6:40 to play in regulation.  Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) followed with two second chance points to bring WSU within eight, 54-46.  Cochran connected from deep to trim Ashland's lead to five, 55-50, at the 4:46 mark.  A three-pointer from Owens-White brought the Warriors within four, 61-57, with 1:05 to play.  Wayne State struggled from the free throw line down the stretch and Davis missed twice with a chance to cut the deficit to two.  However, the Eagles missed a front end of a one-and-one and Owens-White knifed his way to the basket for a layup, making it 61-59, with 24 seconds remaining.  WSU sent AU's Derek Koch to the line where he missed his first attempt and Davis sprinted down to the other side and tied the game with a fast break basket.  Haraway knocked down a contested turnaround jumper with two seconds left to give Ashland a 63-61 victory.  Davis' full-court heave as time expired found only the backboard.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Four Warriors scored in double figures led by Cochran and Owens-White who each tallied 15.  Henderson stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and four steals, collecting his fourth career double-double.  Davis finished with 14 points.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Haraway led Ashland with 17 points, while Drew Noble tallied 16 points.  Aaron Thompson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

TEAM STATS
