DETROIT -- The 25th-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (11-3 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) blanked Davenport (8-6 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) in its first GLIAC match of the season in Detroit on Saturday.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Seniors
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) claimed a 6-2 win over Matthew McClurg and Jonathan Bulmer at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and junior
Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) won their second-flight match 6-4 against Michael Digby and Matias Vargas.
At No. 3 doubles, redshirt junior
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman
David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) won their match in a tiebreaker (7-6(3)) vs. Remy Johansen and Juan-Louis van Antwerpen.
SINGLES RESULTS
Renaudie was first off the courts, winning his No. 2 singles match versus Johansen (6-0, 6-3).
At No. 3 singles, Vane won his match against McClurg (6-0, 6-4).
Mertz claimed a win after a tiebreaker in the second set vs. van Antwerpen (6-3, 7-6(5)).
At No. 1 singles, Karcz notched a victory over Vargas after a close second set (6-0, 7-5).
Freshman
Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) won his No. 5 singles match in a super tiebreaker versus Bulmer (4-6, 6-1, 10-5).
Freshman
Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) was last off the courts after winning his tight No. 6 singles match vs. Digby (7-6(3), 7-5).
