Women's Tennis Claims 6-1 Triumph Over Hillsdale

The Warriors collected their seventh win of the season on Friday and fourth at home.

DETROIT -- The No. 10-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (5-3 overall) defeated Hillsdale College (2-6 overall) by a 6-1 score on Friday afternoon inside the Duchene Athletic Facility for its third win in a row.

WSU moved to 3-0 at home with the triumph over its former GLIAC rival in the Chargers.

DOUBLES
For the third straight contest, the Green and Gold obtained the doubles point to secure a 1-0 advantage following the first action of the day.

First to finish at the No. 3 spot were Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia).  The duo collected their second win together via a 6-1 decision against Libby McGivern and Helana Formentin.

Also earning a 6-1 victory were the third-ranked duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) at the first flight.  They defeated Melanie Zampardo and Megan Hackman - the seventh-ranked pairing within the Midwest Region.  Ruyssen and Komar improved to 8-2 together in doubles play this season.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) finished the sweep of doubles for the Warriors with their 6-2 triumph over Ane Dannhauser and Courtney Rittel.

SINGLES
WSU nearly captured all six singles matches, but did enough to earn the overall win in the final tally with five victories.

Komar was impressive in her contest vs. McGivern, as the No. 16-ranked player in the Midwest downed her Hillsdale opponent by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 at the third position.

Notching a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Formentin was Szpakowska at the No. 4 spot.  She was the second Warrior to finish and helped Wayne State to a 3-0 team edge.  The sophomore also improved to 7-0 in singles for the spring season with the decision.

The Green and Gold officially notched win No. 7 on the campaign following Arafat's win at the second flight.  The second-year player defeated Zampardo 6-1, 6-4 in what was her third triumph at the position this season.

Ruyssen and Dannhauser were locked in a battle during the first set, with the Warrior emerging on top with a tie-breaking 7-6 (7-2) win in the first set.  The redshirt junior then managed a 6-1 victory in the second set to capture the triumph.

The final WSU student-athlete to collect a win was Shanice Weekes (London, England) in her first action of the afternoon.  The sophomore nearly shut out Isabella Spinazze at the No. 6 position, as she garnered a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

In what was a tightly-contested battle at the fifth flight, Beaulieu and Rittel went wire-to-wire with the Warrior taking the first set 6-1 and the Charger the second set, 6-4.  The two played to a 10-point super tiebreaker in the final set that Rittel won by a score of 10-7.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will host No. 11-ranked University of Indianapolis on Sunday, March 3, at 11 a.m. inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.  The two squads met once earlier this season, with UIndy winning 4-2 on February 11.  The Greyhounds will be making their first appearance in Detroit since April 10, 2004, but that match-up was held off-campus at the Eastside Tennis and Fitness Club.
