Men's Basketball Out-Shoots GVSU

The Warriors made 63 percent of their three-pointers to win 86-78.

DETROIT -- It was a day later than expected but the Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-12 overall, 4-8 GLIAC) hosted Grand Valley State (11-9 overall, 5-7 GLIAC) on Friday night and the Warriors used 12 three-pointers to power their way to an 86-78 victory.  The back-and-forth affair featured 16 ties and 14 lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 18:16 mark forcing head coach David Greer to take an early timeout.  Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) connected from behind the arc to tie the game at 9-9 with 16:02 to play in the first half.  A fast break dunk by Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) at the 14:47 mark gave WSU a 13-11 lead, its first of the night.  Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) tied the game at 16-16 with 12:27 to play in the opening half with a triple.  Another trey from Davis tied the contest at 21-21, which was the score at the arrival of the half's second media timeout.  The stalemate continued as a Murray layup tied the game at 24-24 at the 7:57 mark.  Davis hit another three-pointer to push WSU's lead to 27-24.  Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) extended the home advantage to 33-26 at the 5:16 mark.  The lead grew to 10 on a trey from Davis.  GVSU ended the half on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 41-41, ending the half with a buzzer-beating triple.

The momentum stayed with the visitors to start the second half as GVSU took a 43-41 lead.  The Lakers stretched their lead to 52-46 with a pair of Jeremiah Ferguson free throws at the 15:50 mark and a Hunter Hale three-pointer pushed the WSU deficit to nine with 15:23 left to play.  An old-fashioned three-point play from Murray brought Wayne State within four at 55-51.  A jumper by Owens-White trimmed the GVSU lead to 55-53 with 13:35 remaining.  Murray tied the game with a bucket at the 11:49 mark and an Owens-White triple gave the Green & Gold a 58-57 lead with 10:30 left to play.  Another Owens-White trey gave the home team a 66-65 lead.  Owens-White continued to have the hot hand and his conventional three-point play gave WSU a 71-70 lead with 5:29 to play.  Davis followed with a trey to extend the home lead to 74-70 at the 4:46 mark.  Another triple by Davis with 2:39 to play made it 77-72 and his seventh three-pointer of the game gave WSU an 80-72 lead.  The Warriors would convert their free throws down the stretch to secure an 86-78 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Davis led WSU with 26 points, including a 7-of-9 performance from behind the arc.  His seven triples are tied for the third most in program history and the most since Kris Krzyminski hit seven against Hillsdale in 2006.  In addition, his 78 percent three-point percentage is the eighth-best in school history.  Owens-White tallied 25 points, while Murray finished with 17 points.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Hale posted a game-high 31 points behind eight triples.  Justin Greason and Jake Van Tubbergen both posted 13-point nights.

TEAM STATS
GVSU used a 42-28 advantage on the glass to collect 17 second-chance points.  However, Wayne State turned 16 Laker turnovers into 18 points.
