Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader With Findlay

Warriors take three of four in series to open GLIAC play

BOX SCORES:  GAME 3  |  GAME 4

DETROIT -
The Wayne State University baseball team (12-5, 3-1 GLIAC) split its Sunday doubleheader with the University of Findlay (6-9, 1-3 GLIAC), taking three out of four games in the first GLIAC weekend series of the season.

The Oilers took game three in a 15-8 slugfest, but the Warriors rebounded with another walkoff victory in the series finale.  Brad Guenther's (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh gave Wayne State a 2-1 win.

Wayne State will host Hillsdale at 2:00 on Wednesday in a doubleheader.

GAME 3: FINDLAY 15, WAYNE STATE 8

The teams combined for 27 hits and eight errors in a game which approached the three-hour mark.  Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), the third of five WSU pitchers, took the loss (1-2) while Mike Fry, the last of three Findlay hurlers, picked up his first win of the year.

The Oilers broke an 8-7 game open in their eight-run sixth inning, which included Blake Schmenk's bases-clearing double.  Most of Findlay's runs in the inning were unearned as a result of three WSU fielding errors.

Prior to the sixth the game went back and forth, as the Oilers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning but the Warriors tied it with two runs in each of the first two frames.

Trailing by three runs in the fifth, Wayne State scored four times to take its only lead of the game.  Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) drove in two runs with a base hit and later scored on a single by Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott).  Guenther scored on an RBI single by Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.).  All four Warriors finished the game with two hits apiece.

GAME 4: WAYNE STATE 2, FINDLAY 1

A trio of Wayne State pitchers were working on a three-hit shutout until Victor Migliore drove in Devon Christian with a two-out single in the top of the seventh to tie the score.

J.J. Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit and, with two outs, Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) drew a walk which set up Guenther's game-winning hit up the middle.

Chris Waha (Charlevoix, Mich.) pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking five and striking out three.  Keaton LeBlanc (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, and while Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) was unable to record a save he did improve to 3-0 on the year.

Wayne State's only other two hits off of UF starter Darrell Thobe came in the fourth inning, when Chris Gebara's (Troy, Mich.) RBI single scored Vesey and gave WSU a 1-0 lead.

Thobe (0-1) went the distance for the Oilers and struck out six.

NOTES

Wayne State had its eight-game winning streak against Findlay snapped, but the Warriors are 18-5 versus the Oilers since 2007 … Andrew Ciennik went 8-for-15 with five RBI in the weekend series … Guenther (6-for-12) scored a team-high six runs, and Vesey (5-for-12) drove in a team-best six runs in the four games.
