WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-11 overall) topped Central State (4-17 overall) 69-50 on Wednesday night in the final non-conference game of the season. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and gives WSU its first road victory since last season's regular season finale at Northern Michigan (Feb, 24, 2018).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was tied 6-6 early in the first half at the 16:58 mark. Central State connected on back-to-back three-pointers, taking a 12-8 lead with 15 minutes to play. A steal by
Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) led to a
Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) layup to give the Warriors a 15-14 lead at the 12:19 mark.
Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) tied the game at 19-19 with 9:41 remaining in the period and another bucket by Murray on the ensuing possession pushed WSU ahead 21-19. Owens-White connected on his second three-pointer of the night, extending the visitors' advantage to 27-21 at the 6:11 mark. The Green & Gold led 29-25 with three minutes left in the half before
Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) gave Wayne State a 32-25 lead with a three-pointer. CSU hit a triple as time expired to trim WSU's lead to 36-30.
The Warriors took a 40-30 lead to begin the second half but the Marauders responded with a 6-0 run to pull within four at the 16:49 mark. A Henderson layup with 15:11 left to play gave WSU a 44-36 lead. Wayne State led 52-36 midway through the stanza after a trey by from Davis. WSU's defense continued to stifle CSU and the margin grew to 57-38 after another triple from Davis at the 8:17 mark. With five minutes left in regulation, Wayne State led 59-44. A Henderson dunk at the 2:57 mark stretched WSU's lead to 63-46 as the Warriors would coast to a 69-50 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Henderson finished with a game-high 21 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks. Davis tallied 19 points and six assists, while Owens-White chipped in 13 points.
TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 40 percent (27-of-68) from the floor, while holding Central State to a 35 field goal percentage (21-of-60). CSU shot 28 percent (8-of-29) in the second half. The Warriors out-rebounded the Marauders 51-29 and posted 14 second-chance points. WSU's bench provided 25 points compared to CSU's six bench points.
